Give your coffee a kick with our coffee mocha moonshine recipe!

Arguably one of the most delicious combinations out there is chocolate and coffee. After all, Starbucks made over 26.5 billion in 2019 alone for a reason.

However, there is a third ingredient that can take the combination of chocolate and coffee from delicious to absolutely freaking magical.

Moonshine.

Yes, that is right. The same drink that your great, great, great grandpappy made in the Appalachian mountains growing up takes your cafe mocha from a nice pick me up to a complete game changer.

What is Moonshine?

Moonshine refers to illicit spirits made in the comforts of home. Of course, moonshine was not always illegal. In fact, early American pioneers simply fermented their excess grain as a means of preserving it.

Of course, they soon discovered the whiskey they produced was worth far more than the corn it came from. In fact, at this time whiskey could even be used as a form of currency in the (soon-to-be) United States.

However, this was happening at the same time as the American Revolution and it was decided that taxing spirits would be a great way to recoup some of the cost of the war. Soon a ‘whiskey tax’ was implemented which prohibited the distillation of spirits at home.

In those early days moonshine was often distilled from grains as that was a material that many farmers had easy access to and an abundance of.

Today moonshine can be made out of almost anything that contains or can be converted into fermentable sugar. That means grains, fruits, some vegetables and or course, sugar.

With recipes that called for your moonshine to be infused, such as this one, we usually recommend simply using a sugar-based moonshine, or sugar shine, as the base. The reason for this is simple. If you aren’t going to taste the moonshine in the recipe, don’t bother using your good stuff. Keep that for sippin’ after a long day.

Of course, there is nothing saying you can’t use a grain whiskey. After all, many moonshine recipes make a large volume of spirit so you will likely want to make some into flavored-infused varieties.

Coffee Moonshine Recipe

Many flavored moonshines lend themselves easily into a spiked coffee cocktail. Some of our favorites are our dark chocolate moonshine recipe

and our salted caramel moonshine recipe.

These flavored moonshine are versatile and an ideal staple into any bar (in our humble opinion!) They are a great base for cocktails, shooters and of course, delicious when added to coffee.

  • Heat the milk in the microwave for about 30 to 45 seconds.
  • Remove the mug from the microwave and using a stainless steel whisk, mix the milk vigorously to create a foam.
  • Once you have created your desired foam, add two ounces of salted caramel moonshine to a mug.
  • Fill the rest of the cup with the coffee of your choice. Be sure to leave enough room for your foam.
