You can actually use horse feed to make sweet feed moonshine. This is great news.
You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. However if the horse leads you to it’s stall, you can make moonshine.
This makes sense since to make moonshine you really just need anything with starches or sugars in order to ferment into alcohol. In fact, moonshine’s origins in the United States were in Pennsylvania and other grain-producing states. The term actually refers to ‘the light of the moon’ since early moonshiners had to work by the light of the moon to avoid detection from the local authorities.

What Does a Sweet Feed Moonshine Taste Like?
Sweet feed gets its name from the molasses included in the feed. The molasses included in the recipe gives the moonshine a slightly sweet flavor reminiscent of rum.
It is important to use sweet feed without pellets or to remove pellets by hand from the mixture. While most pellets may be harmless, they can alter the final taste of your moonshine.

The Perfect Sweet Feed Moonshine Recipe
Ready to get started? The first step is to gather all your necessary materials and ingredients.
Equipment List:
- Boiling pot: You can use a copper or stainless steel pot. Copper is better at conducting heat and will remove sulfides which will result in a better tasting end product. However, copper is much more expensive.
- Mixing spoon: Consider the volume of mash you will be making and make sure your spoon is big enough to properly combine your ingredients.
- Fermentation Bucket: Make sure to use a fermentation bucket with enough space for your mash to grow.
Ingredient List
- 10 lbs of sweet feed
- 5 lbs of sugar
- 1 small packet of distillers yeast
- 5 gallons of water
Let’s get started. First let’s start by making the mash.
This recipe makes a sugar syrup by adding the sugar to boiled water and then adding it to the mash. This is a good way to make sure the sugar is fully dissolved before adding it to the feed.
Add one gallon of water to your pot and bring to a boil. Once the water has reached 100° F it is time to add your sugar. Remove the pot from heat and add your sugar slowly. Stir the mixture well to make sure it is completely dissolved.
Add the remaining four gallons of water into the fermentation bucket. Stir in 10lbs of sweet feed. Mix well.
Once the sweet feed and water have been fully incorporated you can add the sugar syrup. Mix the contents together fully.
Use your thermometer to test the temperature of your mixture. Once your mixture has reached between 75° F and 85° F you are able to add your yeast.
Add the entire packet of yeast and stir. Then add a lid to your mixture. Make sure your mash has room to grow in your bucket. If not, transfer to a larger bucket. Put the airlock in place.
Congratulations! You have now made your mash. Now it is time to transfer your bucket to a dark room and let the fermentation process begin. Let your mash ferment for 14 days.
Now it is time to Distill your Sweet Feed Moonshine!
Once your mash has fermented for 14 days, it is time to separate the mash. It is important to separate the solids (mash) from the liquids (wash) before we start the actual distilling process. To separate these two you can use a cheesecloth or a siphon tube.
Once you have your wash you can distill as usual. Follow the included instructions included in your distillery kit for best results. Moonshine can be jarred for later use or consumed right away. The actual proof of your spirit will vary with the distillery process used.
